600 'buried alive' in Taiwan typhoon

Hundreds of people are believed to have been buried alive in a Taiwan village worst affected by floods and massive mudslides triggered by the Typhoon Morakot, reported PressTV.

Siaolin, a remote aboriginal village in the largely agricultural region adjoining to the special municipality of Kaohsiung, was destroyed in flash floods caused by the deadly tropical storm.

Members of the Kaohsiung fire brigade on Friday put the number of those "believed to be buried alive" in the massive mudslides at 600 people, acceding to The China post.

Rescue teams have been working around the clock to locate missing villagers of Siaolin since last Tuesday.

Morakot struck the island at the weekend, causing the worst flooding in 50 years.

Thousands of people have been displaced as a result of the typhoon as Taiwan grapples with rescue efforts.

The ruling politicians, however, have come under fire that they are doing too little, too late.

The government has asked the international community for help items like helicopters, gravel trucks, disinfectants and chlorine tablets.

Hundreds of Thousands of people are still stranded by floods and mudslides.
