Pakistan says paramilitary troops have killed 30 suspected militants in an ongoing operation in the northwestern tribal region of Khyber, AP reported.

The paramilitary Frontier Corps announced the deaths in a statement Saturday.

The toll could not immediately be confirmed independently.

One of the main routes used to ferry supplies to NATO and U.S. forces in neighboring Afghanistan passes through Khyber. Taliban militants frequently attack supply trucks traveling there.

A main target of the Pakistani offensive is the Taliban-affiliated group Lashkar-e-Islam.

Authorities say the operation has killed scores of militants. It began last week after a suicide bombing at a border checkpoint killed 19 police.
