Singer Ricky Martin comes out as gay

Puerto Rican singer Ricky Martin revealed his homosexuality Monday to fans through an extensive statement posted on his website, dpa reported.

"I am proud to say that I am a fortunate homosexual man. I am very blessed to be who I am," the statement said.

Martin, 38, a major star and pin-up idol in Latin America, Spain and worldwide with hits like Livin' la Vida Loca, has twin sons conceived through a surrogate mother.

"It has been a very intense process. Every word that I write in this letter is born out of love, acceptance, detachment and real contentment," he said in the statement. "Writing this is a solid step towards my inner peace and vital part of my evolution."
