Judge approves civilian trial for Guantanamo detainee

A federal judge cleared the way Tuesday for the trial of a Guantanamo detainee charged with playing a role in the 1998 bombings of the US embassies in Kenya and Tanzania, dpa reported.

Lewis Kaplan, judge for the southern district of New York, refused to dismiss the case against Ahmed Ghailani, ruling his detention and interrogation while spending years at the Guantanamo Bay prison were justified.

Kaplan determined that Ghailani's right to a speedy trial was not violated, and that as an enemy combatant he could have been held indefinitely.

Ghailani faced murder charges for the August 1998 embassy bombings that left 224 people dead, including 12 US citizens.
