Borussia Dortmund extended their lead at the top of the Bundesliga standings to four points on Sunday with a 4-0 demolition of Hanover 96, dpa reported.

Shinji Kagawa, Lucas Barrios, Robert Lewandowski and Jakub Blaszczykowski scored the goals for visiting Dortmund, for whom Nuri Sahin had a second-half penalty saved by Hanover goalkeeper Florian Fromlowitz.

Hanover ended the game with 10 men after Karim Haggui was sent off in the second half.

The win sees Dortmund move to 28 points, four more than Mainz 05 who were beaten 1-0 by SC Freiburg on Saturday. Dortmund extended their own record of having won the most number of away games from the start of the season to six.

The Japanese international Kagawa gave the visitors an early lead when he received the ball from Sahin and after dribbling across the edge of the box unleashed a powerful shot that left goalkeeper Florian Fromlowitz diving in vain.

Dortmund, who last won the title in 2002, continued dominating the game, but failed to create any real chances.

Kagawa shot wide in the 25th minute and eight minutes later Polish international Lukasz Piszczek had an opportunity to double his side's lead, but he left his shot too late, allowing a Hanover player to block it.

The home side, playing a few days ahead of the one year anniversary of the suicide of their former goalkeeper Robert Enke, had their first chance five minutes from the break when Didier Ya Konan put the ball over the crossbar.

Dortmund had the first real chance in the second half when Mario Goetze and Lucas Barrios both failed to beat Fromlowitz from close range nine minutes after the restart.

A minute later Moritz Stoppelkamp came close to equalizing for Hanover, but was denied by a tackle from Marcel Schmelzer.

Hanover's hopes effectively ended in the 71st minute when Piszczek found Barrios in the middle with a precise path and the Paraguay international made no mistake.

There was more drama as Hanover defender Haggui was sent off for kicking substitute Blaszczykowski who was lying in the Hanover area.

Referee Felix Brych red carded Haggui and pointed to the spot, but Fromlowitz managed to save the Sahin's penalty.

Lewandowski made it three for Dortmund with nine minutes to go after an excellent Fromlowitz save rather fortuitously fell to the substitute. Blaszczykowski added the fourth in injury time.

On Saturday, Bayern Munich continued their run of failing to win after Champions League success this season as they were held to a 3-3 draw at bottom-of-the-table club Borussia Moenchengladbach.

The defending champions are now in ninth place on 16 points - 12 points behind Dortmund.

On Friday struggling Schalke 04 managed to secure only their second victory of the season with a 2-0 victory against St Pauli.
