Violent clashes between two rival ethnic groups have left at least 10 people dead and several others injured over one week in a volatile region of India, PressTV reported.
Clashes broke out between two tribes living on the border of the northeastern states of Assam and Megalaya.
Bhumidhar Barman, Assam's relief and rehabilitation minister says several villages were also set on fire in violence between the Garo and Rabha communities.
"Ten people have died in the ethnic clashes in the last three days and about 20 injured with rampaging mobs from both communities attacking each other," AFP quoted Barman as saying.
Violent clashes in the area have displaced over 40,000 people and survivors have been sheltered in relief camps.
"We shall ensure that all relief material is provided to the people who have taken refuge in nearly a dozen makeshift shelters along both sides of the state border," Barman said.
The two groups have long-standing disputes over land and have been demanding autonomous areas for their communities.
Hundreds of paramilitary forces and soldiers have been deployed to prevent the further eruption of violence.
Northeast India is home to dozens of tribal groups and has seen sporadic clashes between rival groups.
India has a history of ethnic clashes and political unrest since it secured independence from Britain in 1947.
