Striker Emmanuel Adebayor Tuesday joined Real Madrid on loan from Premier League side Manchester City, the Spanish club said, dpa reported.

Adebayor, 26, will play for Real until the end of the season when the whites will then have an option to buy the Togolese striker.

According to the websites of AS and Marca, Real will pay around 2 million euros (2.72 million dollars) for the loan, and will have to pay around 14 million euros if they wish to buy Adebayor in summer.

The former Arsenal forward will be able to play for Real in the Champions League, in which they will face old enemies Lyon in the round of 16.

Real coach Jose Mourinho has been loudly demanding a new striker to replace Gonzalo Higuain, who will be out for six months after a back operation.

The whites tried to buy Dutch veteran Ruud Van Nistelrooy back from SV Hamburg but their offer was rejected by the Bundesliga club.

Real are second in La Liga, four points behind leaders Barcelona.
