Even dead, Osama bin Laden remains under UN sanctions

A United Nations committee on terrorism on Monday kept in place sanctions against Osama bin Laden, who was killed by US Navy Seals on May 1 in a daring raid in Pakistan, dpa reported.

The UN Security Council's al Qaeda and Taliban sanctions committee, headed by German Ambassador Peter Wittig, said it welcomed the news that bin Laden "will never again be able to perpetrate acts of terrorism."

The committee, however, told the 15-nation council during a sanctions review session that bin Laden's name will remain on the consolidated list of hundreds of individuals and entities suspected of association with al Qaeda and Taliban.

The council ordered a freeze of assets belonging to those people and groups after the terrorist attacks against the United States on September 11, 2001. Other sanctions included a travel ban and an embargo on arms and military equipment on those individuals and suspected terrorist groups.

"The committee wishes to take this opportunity to remind states that they should continue to implement these measures in accordance with their obligations under the Charter of the United Nations," Wittig said.

The committee has been tasked with monitoring the implementation of the sanctions and making periodic progress reports to the council. The reports are based on confidential information provided by governments that implemented the sanctions.
