It is uncertain if the Netherlands' Prince Friso will ever regain consciousness, his Austrian doctors said Friday, a week after the son of Queen Beatrix was buried under an avalanche while skiing in Austria, DPA reported.

Friso, 43, suffered massive brain damage, as his heart stood still for 50 minutes after the accident, said Wolfgang Koller, the head of the intensive care unit at the Innsbruck University clinic.

The queen's second son had skied off-piste at the resort of Lech Friday last week when the avalanche struck him, covering him under 40 centimetres of snow.
