Barcelona became Spanish league champions late Saturday without playing, because second-placed Real Madrid could only manage a 1-1 draw at midtable Espanyol, dpa reported.

This draw left Real seven points behind Barca with just two matches left, and therefore gave Barca - who still have four matches to play - their 22nd Liga title.

Espanyol went ahead in the 23rd minute through Uruguayan striker Christian Stuani, after the Real defence had failed to clear a corner.

Real's young defender Raphael Varane suffered what could have been a serious injury to his right knee.

Gonzalo Higuain levelled for Real in the 59th minute by heading in a free-kick from Xabi Alonso. The whites were keen to win and thereby again delay Barca's celebration of the title, but they failed to find a second goal.

Earlier Saturday, Osasuna moved above the Spanish relegation zone with a late 1-0 home defeat of midtable Getafe.
