Turkey, US to sign free trade agreement

Turkey and the United States will sign a free trade agreement, Turkish Economy Minister Zafer Caglayan, who is on an official visit to the United States said, Hürriyet newspaper reported on Friday.

According to Caglayan, the parties are to first establish a working group to develop the legal framework for the creation of a free economic zone between the two countries.

According to the newspaper, from the Turkish side the committee will be headed by the Minister of Economy Zafer Caglayan, whereas from the American side - by a trade representative of the U.S. government to be appointed by President Barack Obama.

The minister noted that to date bilateral trade between the two countries has reached $20 billion, whereas 10 years ago it stood at $9 billion.

The main objective of a free trade agreement is the removal of trade barriers between the countries and simplification of the process of attracting investment.
