An operation against the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) was held for the first time in the southwestern Turkish province of Mugla, the Turkish media reported Oct. 5.

Five PKK members were killed during the operation.

Commenting on the issue, Turkish Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu said the PKK tries to enter the western provinces of the country.

The conflict between Turkey and the PKK, which demands the creation of an independent Kurdish state, has continued for more than 30 years and has claimed more than 40,000 lives.

The UN and the European Union list the PKK as a terrorist organization.
