Turkish Energy Ministry refuses TPAO to conduct oil, gas exploration

The Turkish Petroleum Corporation (TPAO) has received a refusal from the Turkey’s Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources to conduct oil and gas exploration in one of the country's provinces, the ministry told Trend on Apr. 13.

On July 29, 2019, the TPAO applied to the ministry for oil and gas exploration in the Turkish Diyarbakir province in a total area of ​​15,298 hectares.

The ministry did not specify the reason for the refusal.

In 2018, 1,889 exploration wells were drilled in Turkey. Meanwhile, the total depth of exploratory drilling operations amounted to 3,960 kilometers.

During this time, 943 exploration wells with a total penetration of 2,296 kilometers were drilled by the TPAO.

Turkey’s Mineral Research and Exploration General Directorate (MTA) drilled 61 wells with a total depth of 92,599 meters; another 144 wells with a total penetration of 167,303 meters were drilled by country’s other companies.

Some 546 exploratory wells with a total depth of 990,466 meters were developed by foreign companies and 195 wells by joint ventures and consortia with a share of foreign capital.

From January through December 2018, TPAO identified 495 deposits, MTA - eight, other Turkish companies - 21, foreign companies - 304, joint consortia - 91 fields.

In 2018, 91,991 sites with the presence of hydrocarbons were discovered in Turkey.

In April 2014, a law allowing oil exploration in forests and national parks came into force in Turkey.
