Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has criticized the UK Prime Minister Theresa May for her recent remarks regarding Iran being a threat to the region.

The leader described May’s remarks as “impertinent”, accusing the UK of bringing the regional nations misery over the past two centuries, Khamenei's website reported.

Iran's Supreme Leader made the remarks on the occasion of the birth anniversary of Prophet Muhammad.

Earlier in December during a conference in Bahrain, Theresa May said she was "clear-eyed" about the threat posed by Iran to the security of the Persian Gulf and wider Middle East.

Meanwhile, Khamenei also called for unity among Muslims, addressing a group of senior Iranian officials and the ambassadors of Islamic countries to Iran.

The Supreme leader further accused the US of creating discord among Muslims.
