Turkmen President, Iranian Interior Minister discuss regional issues

Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov received the interior minister of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Mostafa Mohammad Najjar, national TV channel Miras said on Friday.

'During the meeting a number of urgent issues of regional and international politics were raised', the message said. 'The president and his guest reaffirmed the commitment of both countries to cooperate in ensuring global peace, security and stability, combating modern threats and challenges'.

Najjar added that Iran attaches great importance to the development and strengthening of traditionally friendly relations with Turkmenistan.

President Berdimuhamedov said that Turkmenistan also attaches great importance to expanding traditionally friendly Turkmen-Iranian cooperation, based on the enormous economic and resource potential of the two countries as well as the historical and cultural unity of the people of Turkmenistan and Iran.

The Turkmen President and Iranian Interior Minister expressed confidence that relations between the two neighbouring countries are built on the principles of sustainability and bonded by strong ties of friendship and brotherhood. They will continue flourishing for the benefit of the Turkmen and Iranian people and for the welfare and progress the entire region.

The Iranian minister conveyed greetings and a message from Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. He wished well-being and prosperity to the Turkmen people.

Turkmenistan and Iran have carried out large scale projects such as the construction of the Dostluk reservoir, Tejan-Sarakhs-Mashad railway and interstate gas pipelines and power lines.

At this stage, a major North-South rail project is being implemented in which Kazakhstan takes a part. The railway construction is being financed by the Asian Development Bank and Islamic Development Bank.

The parties are also negotiating to increase energy supplies from Turkmenistan.
