The volume of Internet traffic incoming to Azerbaijan in the first quarter compared with same period last year grew by 13.5 million minutes, amounting to 152.5 million minutes, a report of the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology on the results of the first quarter said on Monday.

According to the ministry the volume of outgoing traffic, having increased by 5.6 million minutes, reached 45.6 million minutes.

Compared to the same period last year, the volume of outgoing traffic increased by 14 per cent, while the incoming traffic dropped by eight per cent.

The increase in outgoing traffic volume was due to the increase in volume of information transmitted over the network of the Azercell Telekom Azerbaijani mobile operator.

The volume of the traffic on the network operator in the first quarter compared to the previous year, increased by 43 per cent (7.7 million minutes).

The Ministry notes the decline in incoming international voice traffic since November 2011, due to the growth of broadband connections and decrease in prices for this type of service.

The number of international telephone channels having increased by 150 units during the reporting period, reached 9,266 units.

The capacity of the AZNET segment since 2010 has doubled, reaching 86.8 Gb / s.
The level of Internet penetration, as of April 1, 2012, reached 65 percent.
