Federation Council of Russia: Cooperation with Azerbaijan develops in various spheres

Cooperation between Russia and Azerbaijan developes in various spheres and directions, and the parliamentary component of this cooperation is very important, Chairperson of the Federation Council of Russia, Valentina Matvienko said in Baku on Monday.
Matvienko arrived on an official visit to Baku on Sunday.
"We cooperate with the Azerbaijani parliament not only bilaterally, but also within the CIS Interparliamentary Assembly, where Azerbaijani parliament plays a very important role," Matvienko told reporters.
She said both countries' parliamentarians regularly compare their positions. "Parliament's role increases with the growth of democratic reforms ongoing in our countries. We should work more effectively on legislative ensuring of bilateral agreements between the two countries in various spheres," she said.
With regard to the humanitarian cooperation between the two countries, Matvienko stressed that the International Humanitarian Forum, which was first held under the patronage of the Azerbaijani and Russian presidents in 2011, will become a good tradition. "Every year we hold such forums, and they give a very good opportunity to deepen our relations and cooperation," she added.
Matvienko underlined that today Azerbaijan and Russia face challenges of transferring economy to innovation development, knowledge-based technology, and of course, universities play a very important role in this.
During two-day visit to Azerbaijan, Matvienko is scheduled to meet with the leadership of the country and the parliament.
Matvienko is also expected to visit the Baku Slavic University.
On Monday Matvienko visited the Alley of Honors and Alley of Martyrs.
