Azerbaijan, U.S. Sign Memo on Telecommunications

The Azerbaijani Ministry of Communications and Information Technologies and the U.S. Department of State signed a Mutual Understanding Memorandum in telecommunications sector on 2 October. The document was undersigned by the Azerbaijani Minister for Communications and Information Technologies, Ali Abbasov, and the U.S. Ambassador to Azerbaijan, Anne Derse, Trend repots.

The Memorandum envisages U.S. assistance to reforms in the sphere of communications in Azerbaijan, increase of competitive capability. The document is a guarantee of stability by Azerbaijan to the U.S. companies which are ready to invest in this sphere of economy.

The Mutual Understanding Memorandum was signed during in an Azerbaijani-U.S. forum on IT organized in Baku on 2 October jointly by the Azerbaijani Fund for Export and Investments Promotion (AZPROMO) and the U.S. Chamber of Trade (AmCham).

The U.S. diplomat stated to the signing ceremony that the memorandum was a bold step for the development of the economic relationships with Azerbaijan.

According to the Minister, in 2005 the general economic growth in Azerbaijan made up 26%, while in 2006 it is expected to reach 35-40%. Azerbaijan's major policy targets ensuring stable economy, where the IT has great significance. We are interested in the cooperation with the United States in the sphere of IT. We are keen on cooperation with the United State in the development of the telecommunications, he stressed.
