Russian Ambassador: Relations between  Azerbaijan and   Russia of a Strategic Nature

Azerbaijan, Baku/ Trend , corr. A. Ismayilova/ Vasily Istratov, Russia's Ambassador to Azerbaijan, has said today relations between Azerbaijan and Russia are of a strategic nature; adding that relations are taken step-by-step and shpuld not be forced.

During the press conference dedicated to the 15th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Azerbaijan and Russia, he noted that Russia watched closely at how Azerbaijan developed, and that it was happy with Azerbaijan's achievements. Khalaf Khalafov, Azerbaijan's Deputy Foreign Ministry, participating in the event, remembered the history of establishing diplomatic relations between Azerbaijan and Russia. The Azerbaijani diplomat noted that these relations were developed, and they were a priority of Azerbaijan's foreign policy. Mr. Khalafov also said that relations between the two states developed in the fields of economy, policy, humanitarian ties, regional policy, as well as at a parliamentary level.

To date, the commodity turnover between Azerbaijan and Russia has exceeded $1.5 bln. General education is taught in Azerbaijani and Russian languages in 346 contemporary schools out of a total 4.517 schools in Azerbaijan. Fifteen thousand students out of the total 110.000 obtain their education in Russian. Azerbaijan became one of the first countries, which founded its own Slavonic University, where not only Russian, but also other Slavic languages and culture are taught.
