Prosecutor requests 7 years imprisonment for journalist Rauf Mirkadirov (UPDATE 2)

During the court session held Dec.16, the prosecutor requested 7 years imprisonment for Rauf Mirkadirov, correspondent for Azerbaijan's "Zerkalo" newspaper, his lawyer Fuad Aghayev told Trend.

Guided by the article of the Criminal Code of Azerbaijan envisaging a more lenient sentence, the prosecutor asked the court to commute the sentence of the journalist.

Earlier, the Prosecutor General's Office said that Rauf Mirkadirov was detained on April 19, 2014 in Turkey and was deported to Azerbaijan.

He was detained on suspicion of cooperation with Armenian intelligence services since April 2008 and holding repeated meetings in Armenia, Georgia and Turkey, informing about the situation in socio-political and military spheres of the country, providing photos and schemes, as well as revealing state secrets under their instructions.

The court session on this case was held behind closed doors under the chairmanship of judge Alisultan Osmanov.

The next session will be held Dec.23.
