Uzbekistan to restore Sardoba reservoir damaged due to dam break

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Feb. 18

By Klavdiya Romakayeva - Trend:

The Sardoba reservoir in the Syrdarya region of Uzbekistan, whose dam broke last year led to a major flood, will be restored, Trend reports with reference to Uzbek media.

The Head of the Department for Coordination of Projects and Research Organizations of the Ministry of Construction of Uzbekistan Nasrullo Boboev said that the government adopted a relevant resolution, on the basis of which a large amount of engineering research is being carried out.

“In particular, laboratory tests were taken, research continues for scientific and technical justification. We also check how the current state of the reservoir corresponds to the initial design decisions. Research is being carried out so that such an unpleasant situation does not recur tomorrow, in order to avoid such disasters,” Boboev said.

Also, the design and estimate documentation was developed by the organization for the reconstruction of water resources, according to which the restoration work at the facility will be carried out in two stages. It is noted that construction start dates have not yet been announced.

It is reported that at the first stage it is planned to eliminate the cracks formed on the slopes of the dam from a technical point of view and build them all over again. At the same time, their water absorption capacity and the results of other scientific and technical research are being studied.

On May 1, 2020, the dam of the Sardoba reservoir broke through in the Syrdarya region. As a result, thousands of homes in several regions of Uzbekistan have washed away and at least six people died. The Maktaaral district of the Turkestan region of Kazakhstan was badly damaged. Five villages were flooded. A man-made emergency was declared. The flood led to the evacuation of 31,600 people in the area. The water washed away almost 900 houses and flooded 5,000 hectares of farmland.

It is reported that 1.2 trillion soums (about $114 million) were spent on the construction of the Sardoba reservoir, built-in 2010-2017.
