WHO to Provide Technical Assistance to Azerbaijan to Combat Tuberculosis

Azerbaijan, Baku, 6 May / Trend / "The World Health Organization (WHO) is ready to provide technical support to Azerbaijan to combat tuberculosis," it was stated in the letter sent by Hiroki Nakatani, WHO Assistant Director General for HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis, Malaria and Tropical Diseases, to Azerbaijani Health Ministry.

According to the Health Ministry, earlier the media reported of a large number of primary tuberculosis cases in Azerbaijan, the figure of which was calculated by the Azerbaijan Pulmonary Diseases Scientific Research Institute jointly with the German Government.

At that time the number of Azerbaijan's tuberculosis cases were analyzed, with the support of international organizations, in particular WHO. It was revealed that 51 primary tuberculosis cases were cured of the disease and should not have been included in the organization's report.

The results of the analysis were submitted to the WHO headquarters. Nakatani responded that WHO took into consideration the indices which would be included in the 4th WHO report on tuberculosis.
