Azerbaijan to host 28th session of FAO Regional Conference for Europe in 2012

An Azerbaijani delegation headed by Azerbaijani Agriculture Minister Ismet Abbasov is on an official visit to Rome to attend the 37th session of the Conference of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) from June 25 to July 2, the Agriculture Ministry said on Tuesday.
During the event, FAO director general will be elected, Independent Chairperson of the FAO Council will be appointed, and Council members will be elected. Holding the 28th session of the Regional Conference for Europe in Azerbaijan will be also discussed.
Abbasov informed the conference participants in detail about the agrarian reforms carried out in Azerbaijan, the state's care, provided in the agrarian sector, the adopted state programs.
"Being a global organization for the implementation of agricultural policy, FAO is native international organization for Azerbaijani landowners," Abbasov said in his speech. "FAO has always supported the ongoing agrarian policy in Azerbaijan, and for 16 years, that is, since Azerbaijan's FAO membership, it has helped to enlighten farmers to improve their work," he said.
He said the Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev's meeting with the FAO Director General Jacques Diouf in Baku in 2005, in Rome in 2006, gave great impetus to the further expansion of cooperation.
Abbasov offered the FAO and international organizations to support the implementation of appropriate measures to improve the productivity of saline and non-irrigated lands, the creation and widespread use of new grades resistant to drought and heat, creating educational research center on the base of the Azerbaijani State Agricultural University.
He invited agriculture ministers of European and Central Asian countries, as well as the FAO Secretariat members, UN international organizations heads to take part in the 28th Regional Conference for Europe to be held in Baku in 2012.
