Contractors familiarize with details of project to construct Marabda- Kartsakhi rail line

Georgian minister of regional development and infrastructure Ramaz Nikolaishvili met with heads of construction companies, which implement construction-rehabilitation works of "Marabda-Tetritskaro-Tsalka - Akhalkalaki- Kartsakhi" rail line.

The Minister heard the reports of senior officials of Georgian, Azerbaijani, Slovak, Ukrainian and Turkish companies about implemented works during 201, also the Minister approved the plan of the works of 2012. Because of the volume of the works which will be implemented during 2012 the cost of the project will be several hundred million dollars.

After the completion of the rehabilitation works, the railway line will be equal to international standards with all the parameters. The new railway line will increase freight from China and Asia to Europe
The Baku-Tbilisi-Kars project envisions buildup of a new, 105-kilometer section, including 76 kilometers and 29 kilometers to pass the territory of Turkey and Georgia, respectively. Apart from that, the railway's Georgian section - Akhalkalaki-Marabda-Tbilisi - will be reconstructed for the reasons of an increase of its annual throughput capacity up to 15 million tons of cargoes.
Akhalkalaki will also see a station for trains transition from railway tracks existent in Georgia to European tracks.
The railway's peak throughput capacity will make up 17 million tons of cargoes per year. At the initial stage, this indicator will be equivalent to 1 million passengers and 6.5 million tons of cargoes.
