Provincial officials in Iran's East Azerbaijan Province are making efforts to attract two million tourists to Tabriz City, the capital of the province, by 2018.

In an exclusive interview with Trend, Mohammadsadeq Pour-Mehdi, deputy governor-general of East Azerbaijan Province, has disclosed plans for developing tourism sector in Tabriz.

According to the official, the country plans to introduce northwestern city of Tabriz as the tourism capital of the Islamic countries in 2018.

Elaborating on the plans for investment in the province's tourism sector, he said that 10 new hotels are currently being built in the province. He added that the city's hotels have a capacity for serving 10,000 people per night.

Speaking about the significant role of constructing new hotels in the province, he called on foreign investors to cooperate in building new hotels in the area.

He further touched upon Tehran-Baku ties saying Iran and Azerbaijan have strengthened political and economic relations over the past several years.

Iran, in general, plans to attract 20 million tourists per year to generate $30 billion in revenue by 2025.

The country's tourism officials have earlier announced that several German and Turkish investors are expected to be involved in building about 20 hotels in Iran.
