The State Committee for Environmental Protection and Land Resources of Turkmenistan, with the support of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the Global Environment Facility, is implementing a joint project for the period up to 2021, the "Neutral Turkmenistan" newspaper reported.

The project envisages "integrated management of natural resources in drought-prone and salinized agricultural production landscapes in Central Asia and Turkey”.

Cooperation will be based on an integrated approach to water and land management, including principles of coherent planning, early warning systems in combating drought, scientific developments to combat desertification, climate-sustainable agriculture, and strengthening cross-sectoral cooperation.

The project activities are designed to help Turkmenistan fulfill its international obligations to combat desertification, biodiversity and climate change, said the newspaper.

In Turkmenistan, the project will be implemented in pilot areas that differ in soil and climatic conditions and cover areas of desert pastures, forest areas, irrigated lands, rainfed lands.

Improvement of irrigation methods, expansion of orchards, planting of nutty cultures - pistachios, almonds and their subsequent transfer to local communities - will be carried out within the Bahherden district of the Akhal province (region) of Turkmenistan.

Measures to improve the irrigation of saline lands are planned in the Gurbansoltan district of the Dashoguz region.
