Despite challenges created by the COVID-19 pandemic, the harvesting, delivering and selling peaches go on smoothly in Georgia, announced Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture Levan Davitashvili, Trend reports referring to the ministry.
The peach picking season is entering the active phase in Georgian Kakheti region. Davitashvili visited the region, met with the farmers and was familiarized with the farming activities, especially, when the peach fruit is being stored in the refrigeration plant.
"At this stage, the peach picking season is at its peak, the citizens from different parts of Georgia are getting hired in the peach picking process. I believe, that this is one of the most successful seasons of the year. The process goes on smoothly and prices are high, and this is the result of our systemic approach,” Davitashvili said.
As he noted, the Coordination Headquarters is actively working to ensure that importers will not face problems, while all relevant structures are engaged to ensure the safety of the whole process.
As of July 6, data, 1,397 tons of peach and nectarine were exported.
This year, Georgia is expecting an abundant harvest of peaches and nectarines, with a total forecast of 35,000 tons. Some 20 refrigeration plants are engaged in the fruit storing process.
The price of peach delivery varies between 1 lari (33 cents) and 1.50 lari (49 cents), and nectarine - from 1.40 lari (46 cents) to 2 lari (66 cents).
