Uzbekistan and Afghanistan increased their trade turnover by 24 percent to $332.9 million in the first half of 2020, Trend reports citing Podrobno.uz news agency.

In order to ensure uninterrupted transit of food and medicines, the country has ensured the operation of checkpoints on the Uzbek-Afghan border and extended the period of discounts up to 50 percent for the transportation of goods through Uzbekistan and Afghanistan through 2020.

In particular, during the reporting period, rail transportation increased by 50.7 percent to 2.2 million tons.

“Uzbek – Afghan exports have become an important factor in maintaining stability in Afghanistan amid the humanitarian crisis,” the message said.

In July 2020, the Uzbek delegation headed by Transport Minister Elyor Ganiev, Transport Minister of Afghanistan Yama Shams and Iran's Roads and Urban Development Minister Mohammad Eslami discussed possibilities of signing an updated international document regulating the resolution of existing problems and the creation of favorable conditions for the transport and transit of goods between the countries.

On August 13, 2020, Iran has launched a new transport corridor through Afghanistan to Uzbekistan.
