Iran lifts rice import ban

TEHRAN, Iran, Oct.23

Iran's Customs Administration has lifted the rice import ban that was previously imposed since harvest season on August 22.

The countries headquarter for market control has stated in an announcement that rice import is no longer banned so the imported rice that has already been stored at the customs could be released, Trend reports citing IRNA.

"More than 200,000 tons of imported rice has been stored at the country's customs while importers had a problem in providing foreign currency payment, following banks foreign currency assignment the imported rice would be released in the coming days," said the deputy of Iran Customs Administration Mehdad Avarnaghi .

The acting deputy minister of Industries, Mine and Trade has previously stated in mid-August that the Central Bank of Iran has provided foreign currency for the release of 80,000 tons of imported rice that have been completed.

"The country's reserves are in suitable condition and 80,000 tons of rice was released from the customs to improve the market condition and supply to households," said Mohammad Kalami.

"The necessary goods reserves are in a suitable situation and all the necessary measures were taken to provide these items to people," he added.
