Kazakhstan is considering ratification of an agreement on measures aimed at unifying the selection and breeding work with farm animals within the framework of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), Trend reports citing Kazakhstan’s Agriculture Ministry.
The ministry said the agreement regulates the procedure for conducting selection and breeding work with farm animals in the EAEU member states and is aimed at developing the livestock breeding market and eliminating barriers to mutual trade within the Union.
Kazakhstan started taking part in the development of the Agreement in 2014. The agreement is in line with the goals and objectives of Kazakhstan’s legislation in the field of livestock breeding and agro-industrial complex, the ministry said.
The agreement unifies and clarifies terms such as "breeding production", "breeding value", "breeding animal", "selection and breeding work" and "farm animal".
In addition, to implement uniform conditions for the production of pedigree products during selection and pedigree work, the agreement provides for the unification of several issues, including the procedure for determining new breeds, lines, or crosses of farm animals; the procedure for determining the quality of breeding material by carrying out molecular genetic expertise; the procedure for determining the breed of pedigree animals obtained by using related breeds; methods for assessing the value of a breeding animal.
In order to develop and introduce innovative technologies in the field of livestock breeding and genomic selection in the EAEU states, the Agreement provides for the establishment of a unified procedure for coordination and analytical support of selection and breeding work in the field of livestock breeding.
The ministry noted that the coordination of selection and breeding work will be carried out by authorized bodies, analytical support will be assigned to research organizations of each EAEU country.
The agreement also provides that the EAEU member states will exchange information on breeding animals and information on breeding achievements.
The ratification of the agreement is expected to optimize the conduct of selection and breeding work within the EAEU countries, ensure the development of selection and breeding in animal husbandry and increase the competitiveness of domestic breeding products, the ministry said.
