Cultivating more, selling less: Iran worried over its small share in world saffron market

The share of Iran in the world's $8-billion saffron market amounts to less than $200 million, Deputy Minister of Agriculture Jihad of Iran, Mohammad Mehdi Borumandi said, Trend reports citing the ministry.

The deputy minister noted that whereas 92 percent of the world's saffron production belongs to Iran.

“If 25 percent of a product in the world is produced by one country, the price and related issues of that product should belong to the same country,” he said.

Borumandi also added that Iran harvested a total of 431 tons of saffron over the last Iranian year (March 20, 2020 through March 20, 2021). Some 320 tons of it were harvested in Razavi Khorasan Province.

According to him, Iran's agricultural sector exported $6 billion worth of products last Iranian year, 52 percent of which accounted for horticultural products.

The deputy minister stressed that 1.2 million tons of horticultural products are produced annually from 250,000 hectares of orchards in Razavi Khorasan Province. Horticultural products accounts for 43 percent of the province’s total agricultural production in terms of value.
