Iran eyes increase in imports

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Nov. 29

The imports of Iran increased by 38 percent in value and 21 percent in volume, during the first eight months of the current Iranian year (March 21 through November 21, 2021), compared to the same period last Iranian year, Director General of the Islamic Republic of Iran Customs Administration (IRICA), Mehdi Mirashrafi said, Trend reports citing the administration.

The director-general emphasized that Iran imported 26.5 million tons of goods worth $32 billion over the reporting period.

He also added that in 8 months, 20.3 million tons of strategically essential products worth $12.4 billion were imported to the country, which accounted for 38 percent of Iran's total imports in value and 75 percent volume.

According to Mirashrafi, about 17.8 million tons of strategically essential products worth $9.9 billion were imported to the country via the Iranian official exchange rate (where $1 = 42,000 rials).

“Over eight months, Iran imported 8 million tons of goods worth $10.1 billion from the UAE, 2.2 million tons worth $7.2 billion from China, 2.7 million tons worth $3.2 billion from Turkey, 549,000 tons worth $1.2 billion from Germany, and 1.3 million tons worth $1.1 billion from Switzerland,” he said.

The director general also noted that 8.1 million tons of goods were transited through Iran in 8 months, which is an increase of 80 percent, compared to the same period last Iranian year.

As reported, Iran's foreign trade turnover for the first eight months of the current Iranian year amounted to more than 110 million tons worth $63.1 billion. Trade turnover increased by 40 percent in value and 43.5 percent in volume, compared to the same period last Iranian year.
