BAKU, Azerbaijan, October 11. The National Iranian Gas Company (NIGC) is preparing a 4-year project to optimize gas consumption in the country, an official of the NIGC Jalal Nourmousavi said, Trend citing Shana News Agency.
According to him, about $4 billion is needed for the optimization of gas consumption and smartening of the gas supply in Iran.
Nourmousavi added that there are 27 million gas meters in the country and smartening them is considered a big step.
The official noted that so far, the boilers of 20,000 residential buildings and small commercial facilities have been optimized as pilots, resulting in a 31-percent reduction in gas consumption.
“A total of 14,000 boiler rooms in sports centers and public facilities were optimized and 1.25 trillion rials (about $29.7 million) has been spent in this regard,” he said.
In addition, it is possible to reduce gas consumption by 15 percent by changing the gas heater for each family, Nourmousavi also pointed out.
“The National Iranian Gas Company is able to replace 20 million gas heaters. Calculating the price of each gas heater at 40 million rials (about $952), a total of 800 trillion rials (about $19 billion) is needed for this purpose,” the official added.
Currently, gas production in Iran is around 1 billion cubic meters per day. Of this, 44 percent, in other words, about 500 million cubic meters, is consumed in residential buildings and small industrial facilities.
