BAKU, Azerbaijan, October 16. COP29 represents a critical platform for finding solutions to global problems and harmonizing approaches to addressing them at the international level, including issues of investment and technology available to all countries, the acting UN Resident Coordinator in Azerbaijan Nasar Hayat told Trend.
He emphasized that COP29 will also pay special attention to the efficient use and saving of water.
“Water is a vital resource necessary for the existence of millions of people. What do we mean by water efficiency? It means producing the same or even more food and other products using less water. One of the most important issues we need to discuss is how we apply water in agriculture,” he added.
According to Hayat, there is a need to rethink attitudes towards these issues.
“We must perceive water as one of the most precious resources at humanity's disposal and not only use it but also conserve it for future generations. COP29 will be an important platform for this,” he stated.
The 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) will be held this November in Azerbaijan. The decision was made at the plenary meeting of COP28 held in Dubai on December 11 last year. Within two weeks, Baku will become the center of the world and will host about 70-80,000 foreign guests.
The UN Framework Convention on Climate Change is an agreement signed at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in June 1992 to prevent dangerous human interference in the climate system. The abbreviation COP (Conference of Parties) means “Conference of Parties” and is the highest legislative body overseeing the implementation of the Framework Convention on Climate Change.
A total of 198 countries are parties to the Convention. Unless otherwise decided by the parties, COP is held annually. The first COP event was held in March 1995 in Berlin, and its secretariat is located in Bonn.
