BAKU, Azerbaijan, November 11. Kazakhstan has been actively prepared for COP29, the Vice Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of Kazakhstan Mansur Oshurbayev told Trend.

“Azerbaijan is a close brotherly country for us. Kazakhstan has great respect for Azerbaijan, and this respect is mutual. We have been preparing for this conference of the parties with special diligence. Our Minister instructed us to make the pavilion of Kazakhstan beautiful and impressive. We wanted to create such conditions so that guests coming to Baku could enjoy the magnificent pavilion and national coloring,” he said.

The Vice Minister noted that in February 2023, President of Kazakhstan Kasym-Jomart Tokayev signed a strategy to achieve carbon neutrality by 2060. According to him, this is an ambitious task that requires significant effort.

“Today is the first day of the event, and we are actively preparing for the visit of our head of state. The program includes the participation of many international organizations. Just yesterday we presented a two-year transparency report. We are now developing a new nationally defined contribution called NDC 3.0. We are setting ourselves the most ambitious goals possible to achieve carbon neutrality under the Paris Agreement. The new Environmental Code was adopted in 2021, which has empowered businesses in Kazakhstan. Thanks to this code, our major oil companies can implement the best available technologies,” Oshurbaev added.

He recalled that during COP28 in Dubai, Kazakhstan made commitments under the Global Methane Pledge.

“We managed to reduce methane emissions by more than two and a half times from 1990 through 2021. By joining the methane initiative, we expect to attract additional funds for our oil companies to be active in reducing methane emissions,” added the Vice Minister.

Oshurbayev noted that countries striving for carbon neutrality should actively work to achieve this goal.

“We hope that financing issues will be resolved here in Baku. The main goal for which we have gathered is to provide funding for the implementation of national plans and initiatives,” he added.
