Cargo transportation by private sector in Azerbaijan increases

BAKU, Azerbaijan, March 23. Azerbaijan’s freight traffic by all transport modes grew from January through February 2023, the State Statistical Committee told Trend.

According to the committee, this figure amounted to 33.8 million tons, up by 6.6 percent on an annual basis.

The committee said that 53.3 percent of all cargo was transported by road, 34.7 percent – by pipeline, 8.6 percent – by rail, 3.3 percent – by sea, and 0.1 percent – by air.

In the reporting period, cargo movement in the private sector increased by 4.2 percent compared to the same period in 2022. The mentioned sector accounted for 74.7 percent of the overall freight transport volume.

Meanwhile, passenger traffic in Azerbaijan exceeded 271.7 million people, which was 20.7 percent more compared to the same rate from January through February 2023. Most of the passengers (87.1 percent) were transferred by road, 12.4 percent – by subway, and 0.5 percent – by other types of transport.

Furthermore, rail cargo transportation made up 2.9 million tons (an increase of 14.6 percent) in the reporting period, whereas passenger transportation totaled over 964,100 people (a growth of 57 percent).

Besides, according to the committee, 1.09 million tons of cargo were transported by sea, up by 19.2 percent against the same period in 2022, and the share of oil in the total freight traffic volume was 57.1 percent.

The cargo handled in the Azerbaijani ports from January through February this year exceeded 1.5 million tons, out of which 82.7 percent or over 1.3 million tons fell on transit goods. As of March 1, 2023, the amount of remaining cargo reached 60,200 tons.

At the same time, 18 million tons of freight were transported by road, which is 1.2 percent more compared to 2022, and passenger carriage by this transport mode exceeded 236.6 million people (an increase of 21.4 percent).

Besides, 33.8 million passengers were transported by Baku Metro (a growth of 15.1 percent).

Over 332,600 passengers were transported by air from January through February 2023, which was 52.2 percent more than in the same period last year. Meantime, air freight totaled 21,300 tons, falling by 79.4 percent year on year.

In 2022, Azerbaijan’s freight traffic by all types of transport amounted to 218.7 million tons.

As many as 57.6 percent of all cargo was transported by road, 30.2 percent – by pipeline, 8.6 percent – by rail, 3.4 percent – by sea, and 0.2 percent – by air.
