BAKU, Azerbaijan, April 12. Kazakhstan’s Atyrau oil refinery will implement automatic emission control systems on four process units by the end of 2023, Trend reports, citing the press service of the refinery.

Murat Dosmuratov, General Director of the Atyrau refinery, said that the implementation of the project will enable the plant to reduce emissions by 82 percent, from the current 1,242 tons to 223 tons, by 2029. He also added that technological advancements will enable the refinery to reduce the water consumption necessary for production.

Additionally, the Atyrau refinery will also complete the modernization of mechanical wastewater treatment plants by the end of 2023.

The plant will also implement another project before the end of 2025 in a bid to strengthen environmental protection. During the following two years, the plant will install pontoons on 22 oil and petrol tanks, which will decrease considerably decrease emissions of the said tanks by 80 percent in addition to guaranteeing fire safety.

Atyrau oil refinery is one of the most important oil processing plants operating in the country. Estimates suggest that the refinery’s emissions amounted to 10,412 tons, which is 45 percent short of the legally allowed maximum.
