Iranian Foreign Ministry: Zarif did not know about Assad's visit to Tehran
Baku, Azerbaijan, Mar. 5
By Elnur Baghishov – Trend:
Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif did not know about the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's visit to Iran, said Bahram Ghasemi, spokesman for Iran's Foreign Ministry, Trend reports referring to ISNA.
According to Ghasemi, neither the Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, nor anyone else at any level of the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, knew about Bashar al-Assad's visit to Tehran until its very end.
Ghasemi added that yet another one of the reasons for Mr. Zarif announcing his resignation was the lack of coordination with the Foreign Ministry.
"As mentioned earlier, Mr. Zarif's resignation was not a personal matter," he said.
Ghasemi said that Mr. Zarif's goal was to return the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to its key position, to the place it had held.
On February 25, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif announced his resignation on his Instagram page.
On February 27, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani stated that he did not accept Zarif’s resignation.
