The Iranian Civil Aviation Organization (CAO) has authorized 4,800 flights overseas during and around the New Year holiday.

The Iranian New Year begins on March 20. The holiday starts a couple of days ahead and lasts two weeks.

Of the 4,800 overseas flights, 3,255 belong to foreign airline companies, while 1,563 belong to Iranian companies, CAO's website said March 19.

The report adds that during the New Year holiday, 41 foreign companies conduct extraordinary flights to/from Iran.

A report by Tehran's Mehrabad Airport says in the two days before the New Year, the number of domestic flights from/to the airport increased from around 280 to 400 per day.

Abbas Akhoundi, minister for roads and urban development, said a day earlier that the number of the flights landing in or taking off from Tehran's Imam Khomeini Airport had increased by 100 to hit 220.

He also said the airport is expected to serve 280 flights on the last day of the holiday.

Iranian airliners are estimated to provide service to about three million people during the New Year holiday.
