BAKU, Azerbaijan, April 24. The transit of products through East Azerbaijan Province, located in northwestern Iran, increased by 4 percent in the last Iranian year (from March 21, 2023 through March 19, 2024) compared to the previous year (from March 21, 2022 through March 20, 2023), customs inspector of Iran's East Azerbaijan Province, Sadegh Namdar said, Trend reports.

According to him, 607,000 tons of products were transported through East Azerbaijan Province last year.

Namdar added that the products mainly transited to Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Türkiye, and Iraq.

Additionally, 17.8 million tons of products were transported through Iran last year. The transit increased by 36.5 percent compared to the previous year.

To note, Iran is located on several international transit routes (North-South International Corridor, East-West International Corridor). Nevertheless, the infrastructure on the trajectory of these routes passing through the country is not fully sufficient, the territory of Iran is not considered a reliable route for international freight companies, and international sanctions have been imposed against this country. Therefore, international companies are not interested in transiting through Iran.
