Iran doesn't use its geopolitical advantage for furthering political goals, Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari, the Islamic Republic Navy commander said.

He underlined that Tehran doesn't look at the world energy security as a politic issue, the oil ministry's official SHANA news agency reported May 27.

Being located at the center of the "strategic energy ellipse" provides a unique opportunity for Tehran for development and progress, Sayyari said.

The term 'strategic energy ellipse' refers to significance of two oil and gas basins in the Caspian Sea and the Gulf areas. Over 70 percent of proven oil reserves in the world as well as 65 percent of the gas reserves belong to this region.

Meanwhile countries such as China, India and Japan as well as European countries meet their fuel demand from the region, the Islamic Republic should try to take advantage of its geopolitical position, Sayyari said.

He also said that the Iranian navy is capable of safeguarding the security of energy as well as region's security.

Iran jointly with Oman controls the strategic Strait of Hormuz through which one fifth of the world oil supply passes. The Islamic Republic has repeatedly threatened to close the strategic strait if its nuclear program is targeted by US or Israel.
