Georgia to demand release of priest arrested by Abkhaz authorities

Issue on the Georgian priest Father Iona arrested in Abkhazia will be discussed at a regular meeting within the mechanism of incident prevention and response in Gali, to be held on Tuesday, head of the Georgian delegation, Interior Ministry’s Information-Analytical Department chief Shota Utiashvili said.

Issue on the Georgian priest Father Iona arrested in Abkhazia will be discussed at a regular meeting within the mechanism of incident prevention and response in Gali, to be held on Tuesday, head of the Georgian delegation, Interior Ministry's Information-Analytical Department chief Shota Utiashvili said.

He said specific details of this case will become clear after the meeting. At the same time, Utiashvili said he can not comment on the disseminated information on the detained priest.

According to the Georgian media outlets, Father Iona serving in St. George Cathedral in Ochamchire (Abkhazia) in the Georgian language was arrested by Abkhaz secret service.
According to unofficial information, a ransom of $100,000 was demanded for him.
