German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle would accept an invitation by Israel to visit the Gaza Strip, he said Friday while on an official visit to Romania.

In loosening its blockade of the Strip, Westerwelle said Israel had "introduced a change in politics concerning Gaza."

"When you think of what the Israeli government is facing at home as a result of it (the lifting of the blockade), it's something which can only be welcomed," he continued, DPA reported.

Israel's Foreign Minister has invited Westerwelle and six other European Union foreign ministers to visit the Gaza Strip. The invitation was first communicated to Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini.

After a phone call with Frattini, Westerwelle said the invitation was a "very good development, in which Europe also played a role."
