The city's Chek Lap Kok airport handled a record 906 flights on Thursday, then a new record of 945 flights on Friday, the Hong Kong Civil Aviation Department said.

The previous record for the wealthy former British colony, which has a population of 6.9 million, was 891 flights on April 5.

Friday's new record was almost 17 per cent higher than the daily average of 810 flights. Most of the extra flights were to destinations in China, Northeast Asia and Southeast Asia.

Taipei was the most popular destination for outbound flights from Hong Kong on Friday, followed by Fukushima and Okinawa. Hong Kong celebrates Easter as a legacy of its British colonial past.

Last year, Hong Kong's international airport handled 295,582 flights, an increase of 5.4 per cent over the previous year. Another 153,936 flights passed through Hong Kong airspace.
