Obama: Afghan shooting spree "tragic and shocking"
US President Barack Obama offered condolences Sunday for the alleged shooting spree by a US soldier in Afghanistan's Kandahar province, where 16 civilians were reported killed, dpa reported.
"I am deeply saddened by the reported killing and wounding of Afghan civilians," Obama said. "I offer my condolences to the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives, and to the people of Afghanistan, who have endured too much violence and suffering."
He said the incident was "tragic and shocking and does not represent the exceptional character of our military and the respect that the United States has for the people of Afghanistan."
Obama endorsed vows by US commanders in Afghanistan to conduct a prompt and thorough investigation.
