Alexander Turchinov has been elected the speaker of Ukraine's Verkhovna Rada gathering some 288 votes, RIA Novosti reported on Feb.22.

Earlier, the Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine (Ukrainian Parliament) Volodymyr Rybak tendered his resignation due to illness, the vice-speaker of the Verkhovna Rada Ruslan Koshulinsky said, opening parliament session on Feb.22.

Large-scale riots resumed in Kiev on Feb.18. The crowd tried to approach the Parliament of Ukraine. The radicals use firearms, according to the police. The country's Ministry of Internal Affairs says at least 80 people were killed in the riots.
