Tehran, Iran, Oct. 6

By Temkin Jafarov, Mehdi Sepahvand -- Trend:

Mohsen Rezaei, secretary of Iran 's Expediency Council and former IRGC commander, told Trend that while the Iranian government's diplomatic efforts and foreign policy are to be appreciated, the government should take care not to be used by enemies.

Iran and six world powers reached a comprehensive nuclear deal in July. This agreement is currently under study by the Iranian Parliament. Also, the IAEA should ratify Iran 's commitment to its obligations in an agreement between Tehran and the international body. It is expected that the sanctions will be removed in the first half of next year.

The Iranian Parliament on October 4 passed one urgency in a plan for the Iranian government to take due action vis-à-vis the JCPOA.

Accordingly, the government would be allowed to implement the JCPOA "within the framework of the Supreme National Security Council regulations" and with the condition of "observing nine verdicts and obligations".

"Anyway, the Parliament should express its idea. Since this is a national issue, the Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei will make the final decision," Rezaei said.

Some MPs have raised concern over ambiguities and the existence of points in the JCPOA that threaten the country's national interests.

Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif addressing a Parliament session in July said "We would never claim the nuclear agreement with the P5+1 is completely in favor of Iran," adding "We have had flexibilities in relation to restrictions and inspections in order to reach our goals."

The UN Security Council a few days after the JCPOA was reached passed a resolution that allows UN sanctions to snap back in case Iran violates the terms of agreement in the 10 years ahead.

The US has also announced that if Tehran commits major violations of the nuclear deal, the country and its allies would reinstate the sanctions.

Meanwhile, senior Iranian nuclear negotiator Abbas Araqchi has announced Iran can resume its peaceful nuclear program without any limitation if the US violates the JCPOA.

"One of the ambiguities about the JCPOA is that it is not yet clear how the US and EU are going to approach lifting of sanctions. Do they want to remove the sanctions or suspend them? Or do they want to keep some and remove others? That is some ambiguity," Rezaei stated.
