Kyrgyzstan plans to join Customs Union by yearend

By Elena Kosolapova - Trend: Kyrgyzstan plans to join the Customs Union of Russia, Kazakhstan and Belarus by the end of 2014, the Russian presidency reported.

Such a statement was made by Kyrgyz President Almazbek Atambayev within the meeting with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin in Sochi on Aug. 11.

"We certainly would like to join the Customs Union and the Eurasian [Economic] Union by the end of this year," Atambayev said.

Kyrgyzstan is actively working to meet this goal, according to the Kyrgyz president.

He also stressed that Russia is Kyrgyzstan's strategic ally and Kyrgyzstan firmly intends to develop and strengthen bilateral relations between the countries.

"We have serious investment plans, especially in the energy sector, and plan to develop cooperation in a number of sectors," Atambayev said.

Within the meeting the presidents discussed the key issues of bilateral relations and prospects for Kyrgyzstan's entering the Customs Union and the Eurasian Economic Union.
