Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov condemned imposition of unilateral sanctions on Iran by the US, saying the move runs counter to international laws, IRNA reported.

Lavrov made the remarks during a joint press conference with his Italian counterpart Emma Bonino in Rome on Tuesday.

He described US new economic sanctions on Iran as a dangerous game.

Imposition of new sanctions on Iran by the West simultaneous with formation of a new government in Iran is against international laws, he said.

We believe that Irans nuclear issue should be resolved through negotiations, he said.

The Italian Foreign Minister, for her part, underlined Iran's role in solving regional problems, particularly in Afghanistan and Syria.

She lauded massive voter turnout in Iran's June 14 presidential election, calling for resumption of talks with Tehran.

Meanwhile, the two foreign ministers touched on Syrian crisis, stressing that the conflict can only be resolved through diplomacy and negotiations. They opposed any possible military intervention in the country.
