Ukraine will be exceptionally active in the settlement of the so-called frozen conflicts until the end of its OSCE presidency.
"We will be exceptionally active in the resolution of the so-called frozen conflicts until the end of this year. Because when we look at the map we can see that Ukraine is surrounded by these conflicts from all sides. We have 1,200 km long land border with Moldova, to the east of us there are frozen conflicts in three South Caucasus countries," OSCE Chairman-in-Office, Foreign Minister of Ukraine Leonid Kozhara told Intefax during an interview.
According to him, the situation in the South Caucasus is complicated, because there are deep historical and cultural roots of conflict there. "But we, as the presiding country of the OSCE are actively working in Georgia, Azerbaijan and Armenia," he said.
The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Armenian armed forces have occupied 20 per cent of Azerbaijan since 1992, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.
Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group, Russia, France and the U.S. are currently holding peace negotiations.
Armenia has not yet implemented the U.N. Security Council's four resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding regions.
